Guest Impressions

"This is our 6th opportunity to enjoy this delightful Inn. Our visits to the Inn began in 1997. Each return visit leaves us refreshed and renewed. Each time we have stayed in the Kuykendall room, never wanting to explore the other accommodations because this one feels like home to us. Thank you to the Innkeeper, Amy, and all the staff. Again a wonderful visit" -

"This is our fourth trip to the Inn and it remains our favorite getaway place to "run away from home". B is recovering from a stroke four months ago and the staff was so very welcoming and caring remembering his delayed birthday celebration and the fact that he likes mustard with almost everything! We will be back soon to our favorite room, as well. The Kuykendall suite is hard to beat."

"I always say that I begin to miss this place the minute I get here because I love it so much. This was our celebration of 20 years together, what a perfect setting. We leave the deer, humming birds, butterflies and flowers behind; but they are always there in our minds-eye, so that we may recall the paradise that exists here."

"This was our 18th stay at the Inn. Again we met wonderful people, ate delicious food and enjoyed the tranquility of this beautiful place. My wish for you is that you will be able to find the inner peace this Inn and its people have given to us so many times over the past 10 years." - C & G, Houston, TX

Namesake Story

The Kuykendall Family for whom this suite is named spans four generations. Pictured above the fireplace are Wylie Martin Kuykendall (1849-1920) and his wife, Susan Pierce Kuykendall (1841-1920). Wylie was a trail boss from the Texas coastal plains to Dodge City from 1866 to the 1880s for Shanghai Pierce. During the Civil War he was with the Texas Brigade on the coastal plain for the Battle of Sabine Pass. Wylie Kuykendall is also pictured in our dining room on horseback. The picture was taken at the Buckeye Ranch at Blessing, Texas, Matagorda County.
Wylie and Susan had several children of whom three survived: Robert Green (Gill), Electra Miranda, and Isaac Green. Gill married Margaret Martha Moore, who was always known as Maggie. Gill and Maggie had three children: Darion, Dorothy, and Wylie Moore, known as Bill. Gill, Maggie, and their children are pictured on the wall just inside the east door. The picture was taken in Matagorda County in 1901. Gill is also pictured on the wall in the stairway in the suite.
Gill and Maggie moved to Hays County due to Bill's health. They sold 10-12,000 acres in Matagorda County and purchased 11,000 acres in 1902, just across the creek from the Inn to the west. As you stand on our west porch, all the land you see was once the Kuykendall Ranch.
There is a photograph of Gill and Maggie near the hearth in the loft bedroom of the Suite.
We thank Marshall Kuykendall, son of Gill and Maggie, for the use of these treasured family pictures.
